Location:
The University of Alabama (UA) is located in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

Campus:
The University of Alabama covers 1,000 acres in the fifth-largest city in Alabama - Tuscaloosa. History buffs will be interested to know that four of UA's buildings made it out of the Civil War still standing - and are still in use today. These buildings are the Gorgas House, Maxwell Hall, the Little Round House, and the President's Mansion. UA is home to over 250 student organizations and many cultural facilities, including the Alabama Museum of Natural History, the Sarah Moody Gallery of Art, the UA Opera Theatre, and the Paul Bryant Museum. The UA campus is also home to Alabama's only publicly supported law school. To help students navigate the 1,000-acre campus, UA offers a shuttle bus system - the CrimsonRide.

Enrollment:
Enrollment was at a record high in fall 2008 with 27,052 students. In fall of 2008, 30% of UA's students came from 49 states and 72 foreign countries. In 2007, the University of Alabama ranked 12th in the nation among public universities in the enrollment of National Merit Scholars. UA is also #1 in the nation when it comes to enrollment of minority doctoral students under the Southern Regional Education Board's Minority Doctoral Scholars Program. According to their web site, one in five UA freshmen enrolled in the University's Honors College for fall 2008.

Thirty percent of UA students major in arts and sciences; 22% in business; 10% in communication, 10% in communication; 10% in human environmental sciences; 9% in engineering; 5% in nursing; 2% in law; 2% in social work; and 1% in community health sciences. These numbers are rounded figures.

Tuition and Costs:
Per semester, UA's Fall 2008/Spring 2009 tuition was $3,000 for full time undergraduate Alabama residents. For full time undergraduate out-of-state residents, tuition was $9,000 per semester. UA offers several forms of financial aid options for eligible students, including grants, loans, and scholarships.

Degrees and Programs:
The University of Alabama grants undergraduate degrees in eight divisions, including the College of Arts and Sciences, Culverhouse College of Commerce and Business Administration, College of Communication and Information Sciences, College of Education, College of Engineering, College of Human Environmental Sciences, Capstone College of Nursing, and the School of Social Work. UA offers programs in 12 divisions that lead to bachelor's, master's, Education Specialist, and doctoral degrees. UA offers several programs that are not available elsewhere in Alabama, including doctoral programs in anthropology, library and information studies, metallurgical engineering, music, Romance languages, and social work.

Applications and Admissions:
Application requirements for entering freshmen include the following: University of Alabama application for admission, application fee, ACT or SAT scores, and most recent official high-school transcript. UA maintains a competitive admission process that includes reviewing and evaluating all applications on an individual basis. UA considers several factors about your potential for success at UA, including ACT and/or SAT scores, high school GPA, and high-school course schedule.
